Our sponsor was Muller the international food company and they requested a garden promoting healthy living with an emphasis on children.
Our category of 'Back To Back' means the gardens are quite small, measuring only 4 metres by 6 metres.
About our Show Garden
We were thrilled to receive a gold medal and achieve the honour of being voted the 'best garden in show' for our design in the 'back to back' category.
Our Gold Medal
Many newly built family houses have very small gardens but parents do not want a garden that looks like a children's playground or an allotment.
Our idea was to create a garden, which looks modern and inviting for adults but which contains many play features for children, a garden in which fruit and vegetables are grown but using stylish containers and compact, accessible fruit trees.
The main features of our garden were:-
The flooring was a wet pour safety surface using a mixture of brown and grey rubber to resemble resin bound gravel.
The chairs had hidden trays underneath for sand and water play.
The table split into three separate parts, which doubled up as ride on toys for the children.
The vegetables were grown in metal containers of various heights. Three containers had pads of the flooring material on them to provide extra seating or a place to climb.
Our water feature consisted of two jets of water, which jumped from one of the metal containers into another. The water would jump in various patterns worked by remote control.
We commissioned a piece of wall art consisting of metal circles. These could be lowered to form basketball hoops of varying heights.
A sculptured strawberry made a focal point and could be climbed on and jumped off by the children
There were two 'dens' with doors, which were connected by a tunnel through which children could crawl.
On top of the two 'dens' were planted herb roofs.
A metal planter containing strawberries which hung down was attached to the wall.
A wooden pergola spanned the corner onto which we attached some metal hoops. These could be used for swinging off or have a swing seat attached.
